Shilo Sanders Shines at Buccaneers Rookie Minicamp
May 9, 2025
Amidst the buzz of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie minicamp, Shilo Sanders is making strides to carve out his place within the team. While his younger brother, Shedeur Sanders, garners significant media attention, Shilo remains focused on showcasing his abilities to the Buccaneers’ coaching staff.
Impressing Coaches and Teammates
Shilo Sanders recently signed with the Buccaneers, who are in need of reinforcements in their secondary as they approach the 2025 season. Early evaluations from head coach Todd Bowles indicate that Sanders is making a strong impression.
“Like the rest of the safeties, he’s very intelligent, he’s very loud. You can hear him (on the field), making calls and everything,” Bowles explained, emphasizing Sanders’ grasp of the game right from the first day. “You have to make plays in pads. That’s what it comes down to – knowing what to do, and then doing it consistently.”
Shilo’s proactive engagement with the media also caught attention; he ensured to shake hands and connect with reporters during his availability. “It’s a really supportive coaching staff,” he remarked. “Everybody wants to see everybody do good. It’s a great environment to thrive in.”
His new teammates are taking note as well. Jacob Parrish, a third-round pick, said, “He’s very smart. He helped me a lot with the adjustments. I’m excited to work with him.”
A Legacy to Live Up To
Being compared to his father, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, adds pressure, but 25-year-old Shilo emphasizes his desire to work diligently. “They gave me a chance before anyone so I’m forever grateful to the Buccaneers,” he stated. “I’m just gonna do everything in my power to help this team win.”
Position Battle and Future Aspirations
With Antoine Winfield Jr. positioned as a Pro Bowl veteran on the Buccaneers’ defense, Shilo is keenly aware that the free safety spot is his likely opportunity to secure a roster spot. However, he is also prepared to contribute significantly on special teams, where depth is crucial.
Moreover, Sanders aims to distinguish himself through his ability to force turnovers, saying, “Throughout my whole career, I’ve always been a guy who gets the ball out any way, shape or form. Forced fumbles, picks, I’m gonna get the ball.” For him, it’s essential to capitalize on every chance to bolster the team’s defensive efforts.
