Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders Launch ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ Tour in the West
TEMPE, Ariz. – Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) commenced their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour, focusing on important electoral states.
Targeting Trump and Democratic Leadership
The tour began in Las Vegas, where both politicians criticized President Donald Trump and his affluent ally, Elon Musk, as they addressed substantial issues impacting working-class Americans. During this time, Trump was signing an executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education at a White House ceremony.
Rallying for Courage within the Democratic Party
While targeting Republicans, Ocasio-Cortez urged her fellow Democrats to adopt a more combative stance, emphasizing the necessity for party leaders to “have the courage to brawl” against their opponents. She expressed frustration at the current inadequacies within the party, declaring, “This isn’t just about Republicans… We need a Democratic Party that fights harder for us.”
Concerns Over Presidential Power
Sanders echoed her sentiments, pointing to Trump’s aggressive actions that he believes undermine congressional power. He asserted, “Every day, Trump is trying to take power away from Congress,” while reinforcing their commitment to resist the shift towards oligarchy.
Crowds and Participation
The response has been significant, with over 11,300 attendees filling the Mullett Arena at Arizona State University in Tempe, alongside thousands in an overflow area. This enthusiastic turnout highlights the heightened interest in the progressive agenda championed by Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders.
Future Stops on the Tour
The “Fighting Oligarchy” tour is set to continue in Denver and Greeley, Colorado, on Friday, concluding with a rally in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday.
Internal Party Discontent
During the tour, criticisms emerged targeting Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his support of a funding bill negotiated with Republicans to avert a government shutdown. Despite these tensions, neither Ocasio-Cortez nor Sanders addressed Schumer directly in their speeches.
Voices of the Public
Some attendees expressed their dissatisfaction with Schumer’s leadership. Amanda Ratloff from Gilbert, Arizona, remarked, “We need somebody that will actually fight back and fight for the American people and not just give in to Elon Musk and Donald Trump.”
A Call to Action
Sanders concluded their Arizona rally with a reaffirmation of their mission, stating, “We are going to fight Trump and his oligarchy friends. From the bottom of my heart, I am convinced that they can be defeated.”
