Al Qaeda first attacked the World Trade Center in 1993 using a car bomb located in an underground parking garage. Americans heard about the attack on the evening news and went to McDonald’s for hamburgers and fries.

It was like a 911 operator called us and put us on hold. Less than a decade later, the 9/11 attacks killed 3,000 Americans.

We cannot afford to make the same mistakes. A deadly, large-scale, simultaneous Islamist terrorist attack on U.S. soil aimed at sending a message and inflicting as many bloody casualties as possible, despite the limited evidence available so far. We know we have experienced attacks. There’s no reason they can’t try to do more than that again.

There are many reasons to believe that we are primed for the next Islamist campaign against America. There are four here.

New Orleans attack suspect’s brother says attack is a sign of ‘radicalization’: Report

First, ISIS and others are back. Biden’s humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan has reignited hopes that America was really the papier-mâché tiger Osama bin Laden claimed. He followed suit with reckless policies in the Middle East and North Africa, giving them an opportunity to both rebuild and recruit, promoting a global narrative that it was time to rise up and attack again.

Second, opening borders is a death sentence. It doesn’t matter whether the threat in Las Vegas or New Orleans came from Mexico. Biden has created unprecedented vulnerabilities with porous borders and unrestricted illegal immigration, making us more vulnerable today than we were on 9/11. An unprecedented number of individuals on terrorist watch lists have entered the United States under President Biden’s administration. This administration’s policies have given terrorists too many options.

US threat landscape and domestic extremism pose a difficult but familiar test for President Trump’s second term

Third, we have demobilized counterterrorism operations. Nearly every tool we established since 9/11 has been repurposed, distracted, neutralized, or dismissed under Biden. We all know that Mr. Biden has made intelligence and law enforcement a top priority. That includes persecuting his political opponents. To protect his family. Investigating a misdemeanor crime committed on January 6th. Monitor school board meetings. Achieve diversity, equity and climate goals. suppress freedom of speech. And he demonizes conservatives at every opportunity.

We didn’t just take our eye off the ball. We left the court.

Finally, Russia, China and Iran are not our friends. Each instance of global terrorism has involved some form of state sponsorship or support. Today is no different.

China, Tehran, and Moscow know that President Trump intends to take his heavy hand off the Bible and give them a hard fist in the coming weeks. They will be scrambling for sneaky ways to fight back. Terrorism would be one of them. In fact, they are already doing this. Russia undertook a terrorist attack in Germany. China expelled Israel on October 7th. Iran awarded big-ticket contracts to Americans.

We didn’t just take our eye off the ball. We left the court.

Because of this regime’s weakness, today’s terrorists are unwilling to think “outside the box.” They already have more dangerous toys than can fit on Santa’s sleigh. The New Orleans attack demonstrated the use of common and proven terrorist tactics common in recent years from Europe to the Middle East to North Africa. The Terror Tools Handbook is proven. We can expect more of the same.

But today’s terrorists can and have already begun to utilize proven modern battlefield tactics, often with civilian and military applications that are being innovated in places such as Ukraine, the Middle East, and North Africa. uses dual-use technology. For example, we are already seeing attempts to attack energy infrastructure and the use of drones. Just as car bombs and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) move from combat situations to terrorist attacks, other means of causing murder and mayhem may soon appear in a community near you.

How can we stop them? By leveraging our nation’s counterterrorism capabilities as intended, we will continue to embrace the wise, pragmatic and pragmatic approach taken during President Trump’s first term, rather than the inconvenience of the Bush era or the indifference of the Obama administration. By acting responsibly, you saved us from a flashing red light. Give ISIS a lights out.
