Poll Reveals Concerns About Economy Affecting Trump’s Approval Ratings
Recent polling data indicates that the economic concerns of Americans, particularly regarding inflation and tariffs, are significantly impacting President Donald Trump’s approval ratings. In a Quinnipiac University survey conducted from April 3-7, Trump garnered a 41% approval rating contrasted with a 53% disapproval rating.
Trends in Approval Ratings
This marks a decline from previous surveys, where Trump started his second term with a 46% approval rating in late January. By mid-February, he experienced a slight dip to a 45% approval rate compared to 49% disapproval. Presently, his ratings appear relatively stable when compared to the last survey conducted in early March.
Economic Management Ratings
The poll further explores Trump’s handling of economic issues, revealing a troubling sentiment among voters. Only 40% approve of his economic policies, while 55% disapprove. The outlook on his trade policies is even more critical, with just 39% approval and 55% disapproval.
The Impact of Tariffs
Following Trump’s recent announcement regarding the implementation of tariffs on numerous countries, public sentiment suggests skepticism. Approximately 75% of respondents believe that these tariffs will negatively affect the U.S. economy in the short term, while over half foresee long-term repercussions as well.

Voter Economic Concerns
The survey identified specific economic concerns among voters, with 47% expressing that the rising prices of food and consumer goods are their primary worry. Other issues included housing or rent costs (20%), stock market fluctuations (17%), and job security (6%). According to Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy, this reflects a bipartisan concern, noting that voters across the political spectrum share apprehensions about basic living costs.
Perception of Political Parties
Opinions on which political party is better equipped to understand and address public concerns were divided. A third of respondents indicated that they believe the Democratic Party prioritizes their needs, an equal percentage supported the Republican Party, while 31% felt that neither party meets their needs adequately.
