Big Rapids, Michigan — Mayor Fred Guenther officially proclaimed the week of September 17-23, 2025, as Constitution Week during a City Commission meeting held on September 15. The proclamation, presented to members of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), commemorates the 238th anniversary of the drafting of the U.S. Constitution in 1787, a milestone that continues to shape the nation’s laws and values.

In his remarks, Mayor Guenther emphasized the importance of honoring the Constitution and reflecting on the ideals set forth by the framers. He encouraged all citizens to take this opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to the principles of liberty, justice, and democracy that are enshrined in the historic document. The proclamation is part of a national effort to promote civic awareness and engage communities in discussions about the Constitution’s enduring relevance in modern times.

Liz LaBatt, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, expressed appreciation for the annual recognition, which has become a staple of community involvement in Big Rapids. LaBatt highlighted the DAR’s ongoing efforts to educate young people about the Constitution by distributing copies of the document to high school seniors in Mecosta County. The organization also sets up educational displays in local libraries, helping to ensure that the Constitution’s significance is passed down to future generations.

The observance of Constitution Week has a long history. It was first initiated by the DAR in 1955, and in 1956, it became a federal law through Public Law 84-915, signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Since then, the week has served as an annual reminder for citizens to understand, appreciate, and uphold the principles that guide the United States.

For the residents of Big Rapids, Constitution Week provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the document’s historical importance but also to reflect on how its principles continue to influence the governance and daily lives of Americans. With various educational activities and community events planned throughout the week, it is clear that the spirit of Constitution Week is alive and well in Big Rapids, as residents take pride in their role in sustaining the nation’s democratic values.
