Maher articulated that the intense admiration for Trump among Republicans has reached a level that he likens to a cult-like dynamic, drawing a stark comparison to North Korea.
Critique of Trump Worship
In his closing remarks, Maher criticized various Republican initiatives aimed at commemorating Trump. He highlighted proposals such as renaming Dulles International Airport after Trump and even adding his likeness to Mount Rushmore. “All of this is highly inappropriate,” Maher stated emphatically. “He’s still in office for God’s sake. Can we see how it turns out before we put him on a stamp?”

Maher acknowledged that while there might be a phenomenon he terms “Trump Derangement Syndrome” on the left, he challenged his conservative audience to recognize similar extreme behavior within their ranks. “Are you being honest?” he asked, urging conservatives to reflect on their actions and rhetoric surrounding Trump.
The Cult of Personality
As the discussion progressed, Maher expressed his concern that Trump’s followers seem reluctant to confront him regarding the inaccuracies of his statements. He cited an instance where Trump misidentified “transgenic mice,” humorously contrasting it with the exaggerated claims made by some of his supporters. Maher argued that a true cult is identified by its leader’s influence over followers, often leading them to cut ties with friends and family.
Concerns About Trump’s Influence
Maher pointed out alarming comments made by some of Trump’s backers regarding the possibility of a third term, specifically mentioning Rep. Lauren Boebert and former Trump advisor Steve Bannon. He cautioned, “You know this is wrong. You know in your heart this is the moment when Rome stops being a republic. So come on. Be like those mice and grow a pair of balls.”
