Auburn Tigers Advance to Sweet 16 with Support from Charles Barkley

The Auburn men’s basketball team, the top seed in their bracket, continued their strong performance in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament by defeating Alabama State in the first round. They then advanced to the Sweet 16 after overcoming Creighton in the second round.

Charles Barkley’s Endorsement

Before Auburn’s remarkable tournament journey began, former Auburn star Charles Barkley publicly expressed his admiration for Johni Broome, one of the current team’s standout players. Barkley, who is providing analysis during tournament broadcasts, stated that if Broome were to lead the Tigers to their first national championship, he would earn a spot as the greatest player in Auburn’s basketball history.

“If he can finish the journey, I would say he’s (Broome) the greatest player in Auburn basketball history,” said Barkley during Thursday’s broadcast. “What he’s done for the program, him and Coach (Bruce) Pearl, has been incredible. But if they could win a national championship, listen man, it’d be great.”

Looking Back: Auburn’s Past Success

Barkley highlighted Auburn’s notable run to the Final Four in 2019, describing it as the best season in the program’s history. He pointed out that should they secure a championship title, Broome’s legacy could eclipse even his own.

“And I would say this, I said when they made it to the Final Four a few years ago, that’s the greatest season in Auburn basketball history. If he’s able to win a championship, I’d say he’s the greatest player in Auburn basketball history. … He’s better than me in college,” Barkley added.

Challenges Faced by the Tigers

Despite their success in the tournament, the Auburn Tigers faced scrutiny leading up to March Madness. The team struggled towards the end of the regular season, enduring back-to-back losses to Texas A&M and Alabama. Additionally, they were eliminated by Tennessee in the SEC Tournament semifinal.

Barkley defended the Tigers’ performance, noting the strength of their opponents. “They didn’t lose to Providence,” he remarked. “They lost to three schools that were ranked in the top 10-to-15.” He emphasized that their losses occurred against top-tier teams, including a narrow defeat to Alabama.

Upcoming Matchup

Auburn is set to compete against the fifth-seeded Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet 16 on March 28, 2025. The match promises to be a significant test for the Tigers as they aim to advance further in the tournament.
