On November 18, 2022, a group of Republican governors met in Phoenix, Arizona, to announce a new initiative aimed at strengthening border security in response to what they call a crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border. The governors unveiled a coordinated plan to deploy more state resources to secure the border and curb illegal immigration, an issue that has become a central focus in the lead-up to the 2022 midterm elections.
Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, who hosted the event, was joined by other conservative governors including Greg Abbott of Texas, Ron DeSantis of Florida, and Kristi Noem of South Dakota. The initiative, titled the “Secure the Border Action Plan,” calls for enhanced state-level law enforcement cooperation, increased use of National Guard troops, and a request for greater support from the federal government to address the surge in illegal crossings.
“We cannot wait for the federal government to act,” Governor Ducey said during the announcement. “Our states are on the front lines of this crisis, and it’s time to take action to secure our borders, protect our communities, and restore order.”
The plan includes several key provisions, such as increasing state funding for border security operations, constructing additional border fencing, and improving surveillance technologies to monitor illegal crossings. The governors also called for a crackdown on human trafficking, drug smuggling, and other criminal activities that have proliferated as a result of the border crisis.
Governor Abbott, who has led efforts in Texas to bolster border security, emphasized the need for stronger coordination between state and federal authorities, arguing that the Biden administration has failed to adequately address the situation. Abbott’s state has been dealing with a record number of border crossings, and he has sent additional resources to help mitigate the impact on local communities.
“The Biden administration has abdicated its responsibility to secure the border,” Governor Abbott said. “Texas is stepping up, and we are calling on other states to join us in defending our borders, protecting our citizens, and stopping the flow of illegal immigration.”
The initiative has received support from conservative groups such as the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which has long advocated for stricter border controls and enforcement of immigration laws. FAIR’s president, Dan Stein, praised the governors for taking action in the absence of a comprehensive federal solution.
However, the proposal has been met with criticism from Democrats and immigrant advocacy groups, who argue that the GOP’s focus on border security is overly punitive and fails to address the underlying issues of immigration reform. Groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have warned that increased militarization of the border could lead to human rights abuses and exacerbate tensions between law enforcement and vulnerable migrant populations.
“The GOP governors’ plan is a dangerous overreaction that will only further harm immigrant families and communities,” said an ACLU spokesperson. “Instead of investing in enforcement, we need comprehensive immigration reform that creates a fair and just system for all.”
As the debate over immigration and border security continues to escalate, the outcome of the GOP’s efforts will likely have a profound impact on the national conversation regarding immigration policy. With the midterms on the horizon, the issue of border security is expected to be a key point of contention in the races for state and federal offices.
