FDA Announces Withdrawal of Ingestible Fluoride Products for Children

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently announced significant steps toward eliminating outdated practices in children’s health by removing unapproved ingestible fluoride prescription products from the market.

Health Risks Associated with Ingestible Fluoride

According to Andrew Nixon, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), these unapproved fluoride products pose serious health risks to infants and toddlers. Potential adverse effects include:

  • Disruption of the gut microbiome
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Weight gain
  • Potential reduction in IQ

Nixon emphasized that this is not merely a health issue but a moral imperative to protect America’s children.

The FDA’s Commitment to Children’s Health

Dr. Marty Makary, the head of the FDA, stated, “We should err on the side of safety” when it comes to child health. He noted that children can effectively prevent cavities by maintaining good dental hygiene and avoiding excessive sugar intake, without the need for altering their microbiome through ingestible fluoride.

Path to Removal and Future Guidelines

The FDA has commenced the initial steps to withdraw these products from the market, with a comprehensive safety review scheduled to include public input. This review aims to finalize the plan by October 31.

Nixon stated, “The American people deserve transparency and accountability,” stressing that new guidelines will be developed to ensure safe and effective dental hygiene strategies without compromising children’s gut health.

Broader Context and Legislative Trends

In conjunction with the FDA’s actions, several states, including Utah and Florida, have enacted legislation to ban fluoride additives from public water supplies, aligning with the growing movement against the use of fluoride. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis remarked, “Jamming fluoride in the water supply … is essentially a forced medication,” advocating for informed consent regarding health decisions.

Continued Debate on Fluoride Use

The call to eliminate ingestible fluoride has sparked considerable discussion, with those in favor citing health concerns, while dental professionals warn of the potential impacts on public dental health. Advocates highlight the need for safer alternatives to maintain tooth health without compromising children’s overall well-being.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed his support for this decision, calling it long overdue in safeguarding the health of children.
