Transitory Power vs. Lasting Faith: Reflections on Easter

A Personal Journey to the Heart of Faith

Many years ago, my wife, Gracie, had the remarkable opportunity to perform for President George W. Bush during a special event in Nashville. This performance led to an even greater honor the following year; she was invited to sing at the 2004 Republican National Convention held at Madison Square Garden. The experience was unforgettable, culminating in us being seated in the president’s box, directly behind former President George H. W. Bush and Barbara Bush.

A Moment on the National Stage

After her performance at the convention, we received a call from the White House inviting us to join the platform as President Bush accepted his nomination. The atmosphere in the arena was electric, filled with the roaring crowd and vibrant flags. If viewed in footage from that night, you can find us just behind the president, applauding with fervor.

The Evanescent Nature of Power

However, as exhilarating as it was, one profound moment came a week later. While returning to the same hotel and passing the ballroom that had hosted powerful figures, I noticed a stark contrast. The room that once resonated with political fervor stood empty—no podium, no flags, not even a lingering chair. It served as a reminder of how transient power can be.

Lessons from Historical Context

Similar to Madison Square Garden, which experiences a rapid transformation from a vibrant venue to an ordinary space, political power can be fleeting. I recalled witnessing the inauguration of President Donald Trump, where former President Bush was greeted with polite applause. This warm reception, while respectful, paled in comparison to the enthusiasm he had once received at the convention. The once-glorious moment had become a mere memory.

The Contrasting Permanence of Faith

While presidential power will always be subject to the whims of time and circumstance, the influence of Christ offers a stark contrast. His sacrifice was not staged for applause; He was raised upon a cross—not for inspirational grandeur, but for salvation. The biblical reference from Isaiah states, “And the government shall be upon His shoulder…” illustrating a sovereignty that transcends earthly authority.

The Profound Impact of Easter

As we reflect on Easter, it’s important to recognize its unique message. The humility of Golgotha, stripped of grandeur, stands in stark contrast to the resounding applause of political events. While presidents may govern temporarily, Christ’s influence remains everlasting. He comes not merely to be acknowledged but to dwell within every believer’s life.

Conclusion: Standing in the Source of True Power

In our experiences, we have stood in the shadows of earthly power. However, Easter reminds us that we can step into the light of a much greater source of hope and strength. As we celebrate this momentous occasion, it’s crucial to remember that the applause of an arena cannot compare to the eternal promises sealed by Christ’s sacrifice, which remain steadfast throughout time.
